Tinder now lets users select up to three different sexual orientations

Tinder finally lets users select up to three different sexual orientations after years of criticism over lack of LGBT options

  • Tinder users can select up to three sexual orientations from a list of nine options
  • Among the options available are gay, lesbian, pansexual, bisexual and queer
  • Users can also opt to see more matches from people who share their orientation

Tinder is giving users more tools to express their sexuality.

The dating app announced on Tuesday that users can now select up to three terms that they most identify with from a list of nine options.

It’s now available for users in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

WHAT ORIENTATION OPTIONS DOES TINDER HAVE?

  • Straight
  • Gay
  • Lesbian
  • Bisexual
  • Asexual
  • Demisexual
  • Pansexual
  • Queer
  • Questioning

Users can choose from nine orientations, including straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, demisexual, pansexual, queer and questioning.

From there, they can decide whether they want that information to show up on their public-facing profile.

Existing Tinder users can access the feature by tapping on the edit profile button, then selecting ‘Orientation.’

New users will be given the option to select their sexual orientation during the onboarding process.

Additionally, Tinder is giving users greater control over what kinds of profiles they’re shown.

‘For the first time, you’ll also have more say in how your potential matches are ordered on Tinder,’ the company said in a statement.

‘By visiting your Discovery Preferences, you can choose to see people of your same orientation first — the choice is yours.’

To show matches with the same orientation, users can select the option that says ‘Show me people of the same orientation first.’

The company worked with the LGBTQ+ advocacy organization GLAAD to roll out the new features.

Tinder said it decided to add more inclusive options to the app after surveys revealed that an increasing number of users were looking for online dating services that offered more ways to express their sexual orientation.

Approximately 56 percent of the 1,000 people surveyed said they’d welcome dating apps or websites that had the option to select their sexual orientation.

The firm also found that increased normalization of different sexual orientations has made it easier for members of the LGBTQ+ community to be open and honest about their dating lives.

‘We want all of our users to feel empowered expressing who they are while connecting with new people — and we’re always working to make that easier for our users on Tinder,’ Elie Seidman, CEO of Tinder, said in a statement.

‘Dating apps are invaluable platforms for connecting the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re beyond proud to continue our efforts, in partnership with GLAAD, to improve the community’s experience on Tinder.’
