Today show is slammed for disrespecting soldiers by using word ‘Anzac’ in competition

  • Viewers were yesterday told to text the word ‘Anzac’ to the show for competition
  • Some viewers said this disrespected fallen soldiers and breached regulations
  • One even called Karl Stefanovic a hypocrite after host criticised Event Cinemas

The Today Show has been criticised for using ‘Anzac’ as the code word for its daily phone competition.

Viewers were yesterday told to text the word to the show to be in with a chance of winning $30,000.

Some said this disrespected fallen soldiers and breached the Protection Of Word ‘Anzac’ Act of 1920.

Daniel Rose wrote on Facebook: ‘Considering Stefanovic lost his s*** over a movie opening today, saying it took away from the meaning of the day, it’s just so hypocritical.

‘Apparently Sunrise put their cash cow out to pasture on ANZAC day out of respect.’

The Protection Of Word ‘Anzac’ Act states: ‘No person may use the word ‘Anzac’, or any word resembling it, in connection with any trade, business, calling or profession or in connection with any entertainment or any lottery or art union or as the name or part of a name of any private residence, boat, vehicle of charitable or other institution, or other institution, or any building without the authority of the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs.’

To win the money, viewers text the code word to the show. Then the hosts ring one of the numbers selected at random.

The viewer must then answer within three rings and say ‘I wake up with Today.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Nine for comment.
