Between all the ‘bae’, ‘yolo’, and ‘ghosting’, many of us struggle to keep up to date with modern slang.
Today show host Georgie Gardner said she just couldn’t understand the words her teenage children are using, including ‘eshay’, which means a ‘lad who’s cashed up with designer gear’.
And so the breakfast team decided to take to the streets of Sydney to ask shoppers to decode the latest slang phrases – leaving them very confused.
The Today show decided to take to the streets of Sydney to ask shoppers to decode the latest slang phrases – leaving them very confused (left to right: Woman guessing what ‘banger’ means and man unsure what ‘bra’ means)
Banger
The reporter asked a woman: ‘Another thing we’ve heard a lot of is “banger”, do you know what that means?’
Looking confused, the woman guessed: ‘Banger? Sounds like a sausage.’
It’s easy to confuse ‘banger’ with the classic dish ‘bangers and mash’, but the term actually means a great song.
Yeet
Two young girls were asked what ‘yeet’ meant, to which they responded: ‘We use “yeet” all the time, like when we made plans to hang out today, when we finalised plans, we were like “okay, yeet”.’
The word ‘yeet’ is another term to express an excited ‘yes’.
‘When someone is ghosting you, they are pretending they don’t exist,’ the woman (pictured) answered correctly, adding ‘usually happens after a Tinder date’
Ghosting
‘When someone is ghosting you, they are pretending they don’t exist,’ one woman answered correctly, adding ‘usually happens after a Tinder date’.
Commonly used in the modern dating world, the term ‘ghosting’ is the act where a partner or date simply disappears without a trace from your life.
This term can also be used in friendships where someone cuts ties with a mate without any explanation.
Burnt or roasted
Two teenage boys were asked what ‘burnt or roasted’ mean, to which one of them said when someone makes fun of his red hair.
When someone says they’ve been ‘burnt’ or ‘roasted’, it means they’ve been insulted by a particularly witty or impressive insult.
Bra
The reporter asked an elderly man what ‘bra’ mean, to which he responded: ‘How do you spell it?’
After she spelled out the term, he said: ‘Don’t know.’
The term ‘bra’ is just a slang word for ‘bro’ or ‘friend’.
