Today star Karl Stefanovic weighs in on Superman’s shock announcement that he’s bisexual – and says the superhero must actually be gay because he wears his underpants outside his costume

It was revealed that Superman is set to come out as bisexual this week, and Today show star Karl Stefanovic has some thoughts on the issue.

Discussing the move on Tuesday morning’s episode of the breakfast program, the 47-year-old mistakenly labelled Superman as ‘gay’ and cited his costume as proof.

‘Is it any great surprise to anyone that a dude who wears his underpants on top of his leotard is gay?’ Karl said.

Entertainment reporter Brooke Boney replied: ‘He is very ripped. Straight men don’t look after themselves like that’.

‘I mean, look at the photo!’ Karl continued. ‘Is it any surprise? Just have a quick look at Superman. There is no surprise that Superman is gay’.

Superman has been defined as bisexual, meaning he has an attraction to both men and women, or more than one gender.

The news marks what DC has branded a ‘bold new direction’ for the legendary superhero.

The move began in July, when the company debuted a new series of comics about the character, featuring Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s son Jonathan, who inherited the role from his cape-wearing father.

In the months since the Superman: Son of Kal-El series made its debut, 17-year-old Jon has taken on several hot-button issues, including high school shootings, climate change, and the deportation of refugees.

'Bold new direction': Jonathan Kent - who is the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane - took over the Superman title from his father, and like his dad, he will also begin dating a reporter
