Tokyo Olympics: Andrew Pozzi misses out on medal in men’s 110m hurdles as Hansle Parchment wins gold

Team GB’s Andrew Pozzi misses out on medal in men’s 110m hurdles as he finishes seventh in the final… with Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment claiming surprise gold over world record holder Grant Holloway

Andrew Pozzi came seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles final while Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment took gold in a shock ahead of favourite Grant Holloway of the USA.

Pozzi, who qualified as a fastest loser from his semi-final on Wednesday, struggled towards the end of his race as did world record holder Holloway, who was pipped to the gold medal after a strong finish by Parchment.

Pozzi, 29, told the BBC afterwards of his disappointment at his 13.30 second run: ‘I came here wanting to win a medal, I wasn’t moving quite how I wanted.

‘Sadly, in that race I tried to fight it a little bit. It’s a disappointment not to win a medal.

‘It’s been a big journey, I’m so grateful for everyone who’s contributed over the last decade. It’s frustrating, it’s not quite where I want to be.

‘I’m proud of the progress I’m making, although I’m not happy with the result today I’ll keep building. Thank you to everyone at home.’

Holloway, the world champion, was in front through nine out of the 10 hurdles, but suddenly faded on the last.

Parchment flew past him to add an Olympic gold to the bronze medal he won at the 2012 London Games in a season’s best time of 13.04 seconds.

Holloway took silver in 13.09 and another Jamaican, Ronald Levy, had the bronze in 13.10 seconds.
