Tom Trbojevic needs surgery on severe shoulder injury after dislocating it and faces FIVE-MONTH recovery

Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic faces up to five months on the sidelines after dislocating his left shoulder against Parramatta on Friday night.

The reigning Dally M medallist has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season and will need to undergo surgery to repair the joint.

According to Nine’s reporter Danny Weidler, the star fullback visited two specialists on Monday and was told surgery on his shoulder carries a prognosis of five months.

Tom Trbojevic will be out for the season after dislocating his left shoulder on Friday night

That means the 25-year-old could be back in training in November, approximately four months ahead of the start of the 2023 NRL season.

Trbojevic sustained the injury in the second half of the Sea Eagles’ 22-20 loss against the Eels as he fell onto his outstretched left arm as he tried to clear the ball out of the in-goal.

He had to use his jersey as a makeshift sling as he was taken straight from the field, and did not return for the rest of the match.

On Saturday Trbojevic said he knew he was in trouble the instant he landed on the joint.

‘It’s hard to put into words how I’m feeling,’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald. ‘It didn’t feel great when it popped out. I knew straight away it was serious. I said sorry to [Manly coach] Des [Hasler]. You can’t help injuries, but I felt bad.’

Hasler said the injury to the star fullback was ‘a cruel blow but we know he will be back’.

Trbjoevic’s injury is a devastating blow for the Sea Eagles, who have blown hot and cold so far this season and sit 10th on the ladder with a 5-6 record – the same as the eighth-placed Rabbitohs.

Trbojevic missed four games this season with a knee injury that required surgery before returning in the win over the Tigers in Round 9, but looked in clear discomfort the following week in the 38-0 hammering against Brisbane in Magic Round.

His injury could also derail New South Wales’ plans to win a fourth State of Origin series in five years. Trbojevic won the Wally Lewis Medal for best player in last year’s Origin series and has scored nine tries in his eight games against the Maroons.

Aside from the Manly champion, the Blues could be without a host of starss including Souths fullback Latrell Mitchell and his Melbourne counterpart Ryan Papenhuyzen, who are recovering from hamstring and knee injuries respectively.

Cronulla gun Dale Finucane is also out with a knee complaint, while Roosters hooker Victor Radley has been ruled out for 10 weeks with an ankle injury.

Significantly, Queensland’s only series win since Brad Fittler took charge of the Blues came in 2020, when Trbojevic and Mitchell were both unavailable.
