An Australian spy has revealed what is it really like to work for the country’s secret service.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) is hiring more spies to protect the country against foreign interference and espionage.

The recruitment drive comes after a parliamentary inquiry into Australia’s metadata laws found that we are under unprecedented threat from foreign agents.

‘Sam’, who is an intelligence officer for the ASIO, told 9 News that her job is nothing like the glamorous life of fictional spy James Bond.

‘We are not running around and driving Aston Martins and drinking martinis,’ she said.

Sam was a nurse before she became a spy after the 9/11 terror attacks in the US and the 2003 Bali bombings.

Her job title is an intelligence officer, which is hidden from her family and she won’t say what she does or how she does it.

‘We are working to protect people from harm and that’s probably one of the most important jobs in the world,’ Sam said.

Terror investigations in Australia have double over the past year, with ASIO preventing 17 terrorist attacks in the country since 2014.

The company are hiring more intelligence officers and analysts to join the fight against threatening action in Australia.

Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold any bachelor degree, and will be subject to a vigorous background check to get a role.

ASIO director-general Mike Burgess encouraged people from all walks of life to apply, as spies need to be unassuming and blend in to their environment.

‘Our success is built on the imagination and intelligence of our humans,’ he said.

‘We need people who can out-think and out-imagine our adversaries, and who can harness the power of technology and data alongside good old-fashioned relationship building to achieve our mission of protecting Australia.’
