Tottenham fans at disadvantage as Liverpool supporters buy all the cheaper flights from London

An expected 50,000 combined Liverpool and Tottenham fans are set to pay extortionate prices if they wish to be in Madrid for next month’s Champions League final.

Both sides booked their passage to the June 1 showpiece in the most dramatic of ways with Liverpool overcoming Barcelona on Tuesday night and Tottenham doing likewise against Ajax a day later.

However, both sets of supporters will pay through the nose due to the mass hike in prices by airlines to the Spanish capital and hotels to stay there on that day.

On the weekend of the Champions League final itself, the cheapest accommodation to stay one night in Madrid is at an eye-watering £452 via Booking.com. That is for a six-person studio apartment at Village Sol Apartments so costs would work out at £75.33pp if six people stayed the night. However, with just one apartment left on the website, that is bound to go.

Comparing prices to the weekend before again (May 25-26), Village Sol Apartments is currently sold out but a three-person studio is available on June 8-9 at £116 (£38.66pp). That is a price difference of £36.67 per person in the space of a week.

If fans wished to stay at a hotel then the cheapest two-person room for the night on June 1 is a staggering £827, with only one room available on the website. The next ‘cheapest’ rises to £948.

The £827 Hotel Los 5 Pinos has a staggering price drop if someone wished to stay there for one night the weekend before (May 25-26). A two person room reduces from £827 to just £67 – a price differential of £760.

These prices aren’t the only examples. The £948 Sterling hotel is available the weekend after (June 8-9) at £193 – a whopping decrease by £755.

Liverpool fans already have one over Tottenham ahead of the second-ever all-English Champions League final – after booking up all the cheap flights.

Reds supporters had a day head-start over their Spurs counterparts to secure their plane tickets to Madrid.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men staged a remarkable comeback on Wednesday coming from 3-0 down to beat Ajax 3-3 on away goals.

But Liverpool’s followers were able to book their flights on Tuesday night after their equally stunning 4-3 semi-final win over Barcelona.

Those included flights from London to the Spanish capital – which Spurs fans would have wanted – before the north London club booked their spot in the final.

Direct flights from the Liverpool to Madrid were starting from £1,338 on Thursday morning.

Non-direct flights – taking a total of 35 hours with stops in Dublin and Marrakesh – were still £375.

Flights direct from London were £1,498 on Thursday and non-direct – taking a total of 41 hours – at £307.

In contrast, the cheapest weekend return flight from London to Madrid on May 25-26, a week before the final, comes in at £175 via skyscanner. The outbound flight is between midnight and 2pm – mirroring the time needed for a fan to fly to Madrid in time for the final.

The same website doesn’t have a return flight going from Liverpool to Madrid on that weekend but does have a flight available from May 24-26. With no outbound restrictions there is only one flight available and that is priced at £186.

About having a march on flights, Liverpool fan Vanessa Furey tweeted: ‘Dear Tottenham fans. See you Madrid. Love Liverpool fans.

‘We already nabbed all the cheap flights, sorry about that.’ ZAG-KAG said: ‘If it wasn’t difficult enough for Liverpool fans to get flights to Madrid, how difficult must it be for the Tottenham fans now.’

Another footy fan Monica tweeted: ‘Good luck to Tottenham fans getting flights to Madrid.’

Last month before the semi-finals, similar return flights from Liverpool were priced at £129 and from London £65.

A week later they are £710 and £274 respectively.
