Tottenham suffer injury scare as Son Heung-min picks up calf injury while on international duty with South Korea and is a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace… with Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso also ruled out

  • Tottenham winger Son Heung-min has picked up an injury on international duty
  • Son has a calf strain, which has ruled him out of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier
  • Spurs face three London derbies this month, including Arsenal and Chelsea ties
  • Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are set to miss Saturday’s trip to Palace

Tottenham have been handed an injury scare during the international break as Son Heung-min has sprained his right calf whilst on South Korea duty.

The Spurs forward started feeling discomfort in his leg during a training session on Monday after playing the full 90 minutes of their goalless draw with Iraq earlier this week.

The 29-year-old has been left out of the squad for his country’s final World Cup qualifier with Lebanon on Tuesday night, with Premier League leaders Spurs waiting to hear the full extent of the winger’s injury.

A statement from the Korean FA read: ‘Son Heung-min was removed from the player’s protection due to a right calf muscle sprain, which was conducted yesterday after training because he felt discomfort in his right calf.’

Son has started the season in brilliant form for Tottenham, scoring the winning goals in their August victories against Manchester City and Watford to propel Spurs to the top of the Premier League table.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are the only top-flight side still with a 100 per cent record at the start of this season but face a tricky run of fixtures this month.

Tottenham have three London derbies in September, with a trip to Crystal Palace coming this Saturday lunchtime before hosting Chelsea the following weekend.

Spurs then have a Carabao Cup third-round tie at Wolves a few days after hosting the European champions before travelling to fierce north London rivals Arsenal on September 26.

Tottenham are already set to be without Argentinian duo Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso for the trip to Palace this weekend, after the pair ignored the Premier League’s wishes not to link up for international duty with their country.

Romero and Lo Celso were two of four Premier League stars caught in the World Cup qualifying Covid controversy between Argentina and Brazil, along with Aston Villa duo Emiliano Martinez and Emi Buendia.

While Aston Villa allowed their players to play in the fixture that was dramatically abandoned on Sunday night, Sportsmail understands Spurs did not give the go-ahead for Romero and Lo Celso to travel.

The Argentine FA (AFA) announced on Sunday night that Romero and Lo Celso would fly to Croatia for a 10-day quarantine before flying back to the UK after being released from the squad. The two players are set to faces fines on their return.

Team-mate Davinson Sanchez is also set to be fined for joining up with the Colombia squad. He started the 1-1 draw in Paraguay – which is on the UK’s red list.
