Cesc Fabregas believes Harry Kane would be the perfect replacement for Karim Benzema at Real Madrid and insists he has the right mentality to deal with the pressure of playing for the Spanish giants.

England star Kane is desperate to win silverware and has made his intentions to leave Tottenham this summer clear, but chairman Daniel Levy is digging his heels in in an attempt to keep hold of the striker.

Manchester City and United have been heavily linked with a move for Kane, who would likely cost in excess of £100million, while Madrid have been long-time admirers of him.

A summer move to Madrid doesn’t seem to be on the cards for Kane, however, with 33-year-old Benzema still proving to be prolific despite his age and the club instead fully focused on luring Kylian Mbappe away from Paris Saint-Germain.

But former Chelsea and Barcelona midfielder Fabregas feels that Kane is tailor-made for Madrid and would be a fitting choice to succeed Benzema.

‘For a long time I have felt that Harry Kane would be the perfect replacement for Karim Benzema at Real Madrid,’ Fabregas said in his Telegraph column.

‘Of course, Benzema showed again at the European Championships that he is not going anywhere and that he is playing very, very well, but the fact I even think Kane is capable of taking over from him in Madrid shows how highly I rate him.

‘The pressure at Madrid, like it was at Barcelona, is not something every player could cope with. But if Benzema ever left or ever started to slow down a little bit, then Kane would be the right guy for them.

‘Even without knowing him very well myself, you can see that he has a good mentality and you hear from other people that he works and trains hard. Jose Mourinho, as people saw on the documentary, always talks about Kane very, very highly. He has what you want from your captain and he has what you need to be a top player.’

The 27-year-old, who enjoyed another productive season for Tottenham last term, scoring 23 goals in the Premier League to claim the Golden Boot, got his Euro 2020 campaign up and running on Tuesday as he netted his first of the tournament in the 2-0 victory over Germany.

Kane had been under intense scrutiny after failing to find the net and some underwhelming performances in his first three matches, but Fabregas believes that the whole England team will now fancy their chances of going all the way after he ended his barren spell.

He added: ‘The rest of the players will believe that his goal will take him to the next level where he always was and there will be a feeling that he is going to keep scoring whenever he gets a chance.

‘It is so important for a team to have a striker who is in good form because you know they can change a game for you even if things are difficult or the performance is maybe not going so well. It takes a bit of pressure off everybody if you have someone you are confident will score in every game.’
