Tottenham vs Liverpool combined XI: Champions League final dream team

Liverpool and Tottenham will meet in the Champions League final in Madrid this weekend.

It will be the first all-English final in the competition since Manchester United beat Chelsea in Moscow in 2008.

Here, Sportsmail selects who would make a combined XI from the two squads ahead of their meeting in the Spanish capital on Saturday night…

Goalkeeper

Alisson

The Brazilian stopper has been a perfect example of how impressive Liverpool’s recruitment policy has become.

Loris Karius cost them in last season’s Champions League final with a horror show against Real Madrid that prompted Jurgen Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards to make a move.

They sanctioned a deal for the Brazilian worth £65million from Roma and have never looked back.

Alisson managed to snatch the Premier League’s ‘Golden Glove’ award on the final day of the season and has been a pillar of strength and security in his debut season.

Right back

Trent Alexander-Arnold

The homegrown talent is set to become the youngest player to start in successive Champions League finals since 1995.

He continues to go from strength to strength on the right side of Liverpool’s defence and is now one of the best in the world in his position.

Alexander-Arnold’s quick thinking from a corner allowed Divock Origi to score the winner against Barcelona in the semi-finals at Anfield.

Centre back

Toby Alderweireld

The Belgian is constantly linked with a move away from north London, so important is he to Tottenham’s back line.

Brilliant with his feet and in the air, Alderweireld is the best of Tottenham’s defenders and Pochettino has reaped the benefits of him having an injury-free campaign.

Alderweireld keeps Liverpool’s much-improved Joel Matip and compatriot Jan Vertonghen out of this XI, too.

Centre back

Virgil van Dijk

The best in the world in his position at present, the Dutch powerhouse eases into this XI.

Van Dijk adds a sense of calm and composure to the Liverpool back line that allows both himself and his team-mates to play the game at a frantic tempo without having to worry about conceding.

Winner of the PFA Player of the Year award, he has been the outstanding performer for Liverpool this season and continues to go from strength to strength after arriving in January last year.

Left back

Andy Robertson

The flying Scot has been outstanding for Liverpool for well over a year now and is definitely the best player in his position in the Premier League.

His boundless energy gives opposition defenders another thing to worry about and 13 assists this season prove he has the final ball to match his work rate.

Still one of the unsung heroes of this Liverpool team but just as influential as the club’s stars.

Defensive midfield

Fabinho

The Brazilian could barely get a kick in his first few months after arriving from Monaco as he took time to settle on Merseyside and adapt to the demands of Klopp’s system.

But after establishing himself in the team around October Fabinho has not looked back and made the holding role his own.

His performance in shutting down Lionel Messi in the second leg of their semi-final proves he has the defensive attributes to match his progressive passing.

Centre midfield

Georginio Wijnaldum

You could make strong cases for Moussa Sissoko, James Milner, Jordan Henderson or Dele Alli taking this spot in midfield but Wijnaldum’s consistency over the past two seasons has won him the place.

The Dutchman’s energy and pressing game has seen him become the embodiment of Klopp’s ideal midfielder and he has played a massive part in them reaching successive European finals.

Wijnaldum also came off the bench to score a brace in front of the Kop to turn the semi-final against Barcelona completely on its head.

Centre midfield

Christian Eriksen

For all of Wijnaldum’s positives he does struggle creatively in the final third and Eriksen will be the perfect compliment.

The Dane’s form dipped a little in February and March but at times he has been a cut above almost anyone else in the top flight with his goals and assists.

He could be one to leave this summer with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Inter Milan all linked with him in the last few months.

Right wing

Mo Salah

The Egyptian finished last season’s Champions League final in tears after a cynical challenge from Sergio Ramos saw him sprain ligaments in his left shoulder and come off after just 31 minutes.

He was still clearly feeling the effects at the World Cup in Russia but returned to Liverpool desperate to prove his exploits last season weren’t just a one off.

Salah scored 26 times and contributed 13 assists to fire the Reds back into the Champions League final and he will be determined to ensure things go better than they did 12 months ago.

Left wing

Sadio Mane

Moved into the shadows following Salah’s amazing season last year, Mane has come to the fore this time around.

The Senegalese winger scored 26 goals in all competitions this season, including five in his last three home league games as the Reds chased the Premier League title.

His pace and athleticism make him a nightmare for any defender and he seems to be brimming with confidence at the moment.

Striker

Harry Kane

The England striker appears to be winning his race to play some part in the Champions League final.

He is currently working his way back from an ankle injury he suffered in action for Spurs against Manchester City on April 9 but if they can get him on the pitch for a prolonged period of time then that will be a huge advantage.

Despite his injury, Kane has still managed to net 24 goals in 39 appearances this campaign and it is his eye for goal that sees him get the nod over Roberto Firmino.
