  • Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, looked a bag of nerves

By travelling to Old Trafford and doing this, Tottenham showed why they are one of the frontrunners to push Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this season.

What a brave performance this was by Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

Tottenham have been in and around the title race for as long as anyone, but they are now announcing themselves as potential Premier League champions.

What really stood out were the performances of Lucas Moura, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. They put in a shift, they pressed, they were prepared to break forward in numbers.

It was like an army that wanted to attack. They were there to punish and make things happen. Manchester United simply could not handle them.

Special mention has to go to Moura. He is obviously a player held in high regard by his manager but Pochettino has waited until this season to really break him out.

The Spurs boss usually uses a single striker up top but Harry Kane was well supported at Old Trafford, particularly by Moura. Alli and Eriksen were fluid in behind, and the backbone of Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele was strong.

Tottenham and Pochettino deserve all the credit they receive for this win.

As for United, you could see a lot of nerves in Jose Mourinho. He is a manager feeling intense pressure at Old Trafford.

United’s players look like a group that seem to prosper from a feel-good factor. When they are given licence to attack, they are at their best.

But last night, it looked like United were trying to do a job on Tottenham at home by playing three at the back in Ander Herrera, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Jesse Lingard runs well, Luke Shaw likes to get forward, Fred wants to break into space and Paul Pogba wants the same. When they are allowed to do that, they seem far happier.
