‘My legs could have been chopped off under the stage, but people loved the comeback. It was the best thing of my life! I was at Wembley and thinking, this must be how Robbie Williams feels, and then next thing you know: bang, down the hole!’

In light of the incident, an attendee standing next to the stage at Wembley before Gemma went on to present the award had claimed she was briefed by a producer about safety issues beforehand.

The source told MailOnline: ‘Before Gemma went on the female producer told her there was a trap door in the middle of the stage. The [producer] told Gemma to stay to the left. It’s not true that Gemma wasn’t warned about it.’

Following the fall, Gemma immediately took to her Instagram to record a video about what had happened, insisting she was okay but that ‘no-one told me not to move right’.

However, the BBC have told MailOnline: ‘The BBC takes the health and safety of everyone involved very seriously and we are awaiting a full report from Remedy – the production company who made the show – about the incident. But they have told us that Gemma did receive a full briefing before going on stage.’
