A jury found the man guilty of five counts of rape and one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a child.
Crown prosecutor Andrew Walklate read the young girl’s victim impact statement in court which detailed the traumatising affects she endured at the hands of her stepfather.
‘I struggle to put into words the utter damage and profound effect the abuse has had on me. My life is utterly destroyed due to the actions of one person,’ she wrote, Townsville Bulletin reported..
‘As the abuse continued the physical and psychological turmoil continued to control my life and the only out that I could think of was to kill myself.’
Mr Walklate explained to the court that the girl’s stepfather would manipulate the girl with cakes and compliments.
She would be given the silent treatment if she went against his wishes.
The court heard that the abuse stopped only because the man feared it would end his relationship with the girl’s mother.
At the time of sentencing, defence barrister Darin Honchin explained that his client and suffered a stroke and used a walking stick and a long jail term would be ‘difficult’.
He also explained that his client attempted to kill himself before the sentencing.
Judge John Coker sentenced the man to 10 years jail with a recorded conviction.
