A search has been launched for the owner of a German Shepherd that was hit by a car before it fled under a train where it was found injured and distressed.

The nine-month-old pup was struck by the vehicle on Park Terrace in Salisbury North, Adelaide on Saturday afternoon.

Lost Pets of SA volunteers attempted to catch the dog but the ‘timid’ pooch ran for cover under a slow-moving train.

The train driver stopped while two workers in high-vis were able to rescue the dog, the Advertiser reported.

The two tradesmen were pictured on social media reaching out to the weary animal underneath a train carriage.

The panting dog was sitting next to a large train wheel with the two men lying on their stomachs across the tracks coaxing out the animal.

The RSPCA has called for his owners to come forward to collect the ‘friendly, slightly timid’ dog.

‘Aside from his injuries, he is in good condition,’ an RSPCA statement said.

But social media commenters took to the post concerned about the dog’s future.

‘Poor poochy hope he wasn’t dumped like so many others at the moment, hope he finds his owner,’ one said.

‘Hope this goes in the paper, owner may not be on social media. Hope he gets home,’ another said.

‘Poor darling! Hope he is reunited soon, he must be very missed,’ said a third.

Anyone with any information in relation to the dog is urged to contact the RSPCA on 1300 477 722.
