A baby has died at a family home-based day care.

Paramedics rushed to the Balinga Dr home in Skye in south-east Melbourne shortly after 2pm on Wednesday.

A neighbour heard screams from the home shortly before emergency services arrived. 

The baby was unable to be revived at the scene. 

The cause of death is currently unknown.

A major crime scene was established at the home, which remained cordoned off on Wednesday night. 

Police were seen speaking with a woman outside the home.

WorkSafe officials also attended. 

‘Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of an infant at a family day care facility in Skye,’ a police statement read.

‘An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing but the death is not being treated as suspicious.’

It’s understood the daycare is run from a private home and looks after a small group of children each day.

The facility currently listed as ‘exceeding’ national standards is licenced and government-regulated.
