Tragedy as man, 24, drowns at stunning thermal pools in the Northern Territory

  • NT Police responded to a report made from the Mataranka Thermal Pool 
  • A man, 23, was pulled unconscious from the pool just before 8.00pm on Friday
  • Police performed CPR until he was taken by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital
  • He later died and police urge any witnesses to contact them immediately 

A man has drowned while swimming at thermal pools at a popular tourist spot. 

Northern Territory Police responded to a report that a man, 23, was pulled unconscious out of the Mataranka Thermal Pool just before 8.00pm on Friday. 

Police performed CPR on the man until he was transported by helicopter to the Royal Darwin Hospital, where he later died.

A Northern Investigation Section Team will travel to Mataranka to assist local police with their inquiries in relation to the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. 

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident and could assist with the police’s investigation is urged to contact NT Police. 

Mataranka is located about 420 kilometres south of Darwin. 

The thermal pool is one of the town’s main attractions and draws hundred’s of tourists each year. 

To reach the pool, tourists much follow a wooden path and complete a 500m botanic walk through densely populated trees which takes about 20 minutes. 

Once completed, they will reach the hot springs which are a series of natural pools, crystal clear blue in colour.
