A seven-year-old Perth girl has drowned in a river north of the city after going missing during a day trip with her family.

The girl disappeared from the picnic area in the small coastal town of Guilderton, about 90 kilometres north of Perth, at 3.30pm on Sunday.

The foreshore was packed with families while locals, tourists and emergency services frantically searched for the little girl.

Local residents eventually found her body floating in Moore River across from the Guilderton Caravan Park.

Her family were visiting Guilderton on a day trip.

Police said efforts to revive the girl failed.

A report is being prepared for the West Australian coroner.

The girl’s death comes a year after a 29-year-old man drowned while swimming with his girlfriend in the same river.

Despite warning signs along the water, there is no lifeguard on duty.
