Actor John F. Dunsworth has passed away at the age of 71.

The Canadian actor’s daughter announced her father had died ‘after a brief and unexpected illness’ in a statement to CBC Monday.

John was well-known for his part in the series Trailer Park Boys, where he played a cop-turned-security guard name Jim Lahey.

‘With heavy and broken hearts the family of John F. Dunsworth would like to let people know that our amazing husband, father and grandfather John Dunsworth has passed away,’ daughter Sarah Dunsworth said.

John was an original part of the Trailer Park Boys cast, playing the oft-inebriated Jim Lahey for 11 seasons.

The Nova Scotia native also had a role in the supernatural drama Haven, which was an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Colorado Kid.

Born in 1946, the actor had his first film credit in 1978, after studying theater at University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada for three years before dropping out.

During the 80s he also spent time working as a casting director.

Dunsworth also had a brief stint in the political world, running for provincial office in 1988 as a member of Canada’s New Democratic Party.

His campaign was captured in a short documentary entitled John Dunsworth: The Candidate. 

He left politics in 1990 to focus on his acting career, however.

Dunsworth is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a son.
