Tram services had to be cancelled and delayed in Melbourne after drivers ate a treat that may have contained alcohol at their Christmas party.

Eight staff were sent home after eating rum balls over fears they may have pushed them over the limit, the Herald Sun reported.

Yarra Trams’ drivers have to have a blood alcohol level of 0.00 to work.

The food was served at a lunch for staff working on Christmas Day. 

Bosses weren’t sure if the rum balls contained alcohol but sent the eight workers home as a precaution.

‘Yarra Trams removed eight drivers from service on Christmas Day after they ate a dessert which may have contained alcohol,’ a spokesman said.
