Commuters have been warned to expect major delays as hundreds of radical climate change protesters swarm Brisbane this morning.

Extinction Rebellion – the group behind the protest – hopes to shut down the CBD on Tuesday in a bid to spread their environmental messages.

The demonstration quickly turned volatile as groups decided to sit in the middle on an interaction.

Police were seen forcibly removing protesters who were refusing to move.

Families have been asked to involve their children in the planned disruption by giving them chalk to vandalise roads and footpaths with climate change messages.

The group has told parents the police won’t charge minors, The Courier Mail reported.

Protests are expected to run from 7am to 9pm in the CBD and South Brisbane.

Activist Tom Howell said this was their way of proving how serious they were about climate change.

‘Today we’re going to prove just how serious people are about taking meaningful action on climate change,’ he told Sunrise.

‘We’ve had enough of singing petitions, marching, voting and being ignored by the government.’

He said motorists should expect severe delays on the roads across the city as hundreds of people join them throughout the day.

‘If the thousands of people travelling into the CBD on any given morning can’t get into the CBD, those cars and buses are going to block the entrances into the city,’ he told The Courier Mail last week.

‘I think most Brisbane commuters know it doesn’t take a lot to cause severe traffic delays in the morning. Even blocking a few streets for a very short period of time will make it a very bad morning for the commute. And of course, we take no pleasure in delaying people. We have advertised this. We’re hoping people catch a train or ride a bike to work if they have to go to work, or just come join us.’

Authorities have warned motorists to be prepared ahead of the ‘Rebellion Day’ after the group’s actions over the past two months.

Anti-Adani activists have been causing chaos in recent weeks by gluing themselves to roads in protest.

Two people were detained by police in June after they glued themselves to a street.

Part of the busy CBD area was shut down for three hours while the pair were unglued.
