Mallorca has long been a destination of choice for sun hungry Brits, with many returning year after year to their favourite haunts. Undeniably Palma and Deia have proved themselves to be firm favourites with travellers, but have you heard of Alcudia? Situated in the authentic northern side of the island, about 50 minutes away from the hive of activity that is Palma, the islands capital, Alcudia is a refreshing alternative for die hard Mallorca fans. Offering the idyllic combination of a picturesque medieval town, glamorous marina and the islands longest beach, all without the crowds you may have come to expect from the island.

Having opened in 2015, the 5 star Zafiro Palace hotel in Alcudia is a lesson in modern luxury done right. A mere stones through away from the old town and marina, the architecture is a minimalists playground, intersecting graphic lines of crisp grey concrete and high shine glass, the result of which creates striking silhouettes and light flooded interiors. With interiors decorated in a calming contemporary palette of neutral tones and accented by design led furniture, each of the 369 suites has its own personal charm so you won’t be disappointed.

With an abundance of child dedicated pools, a myriad of dining options (from B&B all the way to All Inclusive) and a renowned children’s club, it is easy to understand how the resort is already well established as a family friendly destination. For fastidious parents who aren’t prepared to compromise on style and life’s little luxuries it is an obvious choice. But why should the kids have all the fun? Zafiro Palace effortlessly caters to couples with dedicated adult only areas. The adult only pool was a particular oasis for me, think Ibiza style day beds, perfect for long sunbathing sessions. The wide range of culinary options, which in addition to the Market Buffet restaurant includes four elegant a la carte restaurants which are a must visit during your stay. The fine dining Italian, Mediterranean and sushi offerings are sure to spoil you. Not to mention the barista style cafe in the main building, which is a definite adult pleaser.

Should you be able to tear yourself away from your day bed it is worth noting that Mallorca is renowned for its world class cycling routes, making it a great destination for everyone from fledging MAMIL’s (middle-age men in lycra if you’re not familiar with the acronym) all the way to professional level. It’s worth noting the Team Sky race team return to the island year on year for their pre-race prep. Bicycles can be easily rented from the Zafiro Palace team along with route advice. Indeed Alcudia is the home to the islands annual Iron Man (next year’s event is scheduled for 9th May), here’s hoping the scenic route is enough to distract you from the triple discipline, run, swim and cycle feat.

Zafiro Palace hotel offers the perfect spot for pre competition prep, thanks to its fully equipped 24-hour gym, and the all-important post competition R&R, which will most definitely be well earned after such herculean feats. Aching muscles will relish a visit to the blissful sanctuary that is the Zen, Body and Mind spa. Be sure to book in a massage to harness the healing and restorative powers of their all natural product lines.

For those preferring a more sedate pace to their activities, the harbour is an easy walk from the hotel, book a sunset boat excursion followed by an indulgent dockside dinner to watch the world go by. Away from the tourist traps of its better known cousins, prices are more reasonable and the quality of food higher as they rely on repeat custom, plus you can expect calmer streets and none of this queuing for restaurants ridiculousness.

You will be pleased to hear the hotel is open for the extended season of February through to November, to capitalise on the consistent Balearic sun, perfect for those who like the peace and quiet of low season, or the gentler weather for intense endurance physical training. Your choice, but regardless of your intentions, your Mallorca destination of choice should without doubt be the Zafiro Palace in Alcudia.
