Shoppers were left stunned after a group of travellers took over the car park of a Tesco store in Wembley.

At least 12 caravans, mobile homes and vans were left over scores of parking spaces meant for customers at the store, which is less than a mile from the famous Wembley Stadium.

Women from the group were seen pushing babies around in shopping trolleys after appearing from their homes in dressing gowns.

A worker at the retail park said the group packed up and left this afternoon, after their appearance at the site was reported on MailOnline.

The same Tesco store is said to have had a similar visit from a large family of travellers temporarily last week.

The store remained open and serving customers today and a spokesman said business was unaffected.  Brent Council said they were not involved.

It comes just days after a similar Tesco extra store, also in the west of the capital, was closed down by what was described as a ‘traveller incursion’.

The shop in New Malden was closed as a ‘safety precaution’ after police were called over criminal damage.

There is no suggestion the two incidents are down to the same group.

Brent Council have been contacted for comment over the Wembley incident. The Met Police confirmed they are not involved.

The supermarket is less than half a mile from a 32-pitch travellers’ site run by Brent Council.

The council took the site back into its control last year, promising a £500,000 program of upgrades and improvements.

The site was raided in November by a huge number of a police officers, who arrived in riot gear and in 20 vans.

A gun, £20,000 in cash and Class A drugs were seized and five people were arrested but families living at the site complained at what they perceived as heavy-handed tactics.

There is no suggestion the families at the Tesco Extra are connected to those living in the nearby site.
