Travis Kelce has opened up on breaking Jerry Rice’s postseason receptions record – revealing it evoked childhood memories of playing as the legendary wide receiver on video games.
Kelce made 11 catches as the Chiefs beat the Ravens in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game. That saw him move past former 49ers star Rice’s tally of 151 catches in the postseason.
‘A record a lot of people thought would never be broken,’ Jason Kelce pointed out on the latest episode of the brothers’ podcast, New Heights.
Kelce also recorded his sixth receiving touchdown in a conference game – another record – and the Chiefs star said he was well aware that he stood on the brink of immortality before the game at M&T Bank Stadium.
‘It’s crazy because I’m looking at 151 catches and I can only remember like five,’ Kelce said with a laugh. ‘Damn I’ve got over a f***ing hundred – God damn I’ve been playing this game for a while.’

He added: ‘How could I not (know)? Everyone has been mentioning this stuff and I’ve been asked about it in the media.
‘I said it last year, when I got into some of the Jerry Rice and Julian Edelman playoff records, me and Pat (Mahomes) tying Gronk (Rob Gronkowski) and (Tom) Brady in touchdowns as a duo… you start to hear everybody talk about those and it’s just such a f***ing honor man.
‘Because I have so much respect for all those guys. So much respect for Jerry Rice and how he’s been down to earth and cool as hell with me ever since I got to the league.’
Kelce recalled his first Pro Bowl – back in 2016 – when Rice was one of the honorary captains alongside Cowboys icon Michael Irvin.
‘Hearing them talk about me as a young tight end in the league, it fueled me with confidence that I was doing the right things,’ Kelce added.
The Chiefs star also revealed that, after breaking Rice’s record, his mind drifted back to his childhood, when he would play the video game ‘Backyard Football’.

‘What’s even more funny is I have this weird image in the back of my head of Backyard Football on the computer growing up,’ he said.
‘If you remember, Jerry Rice was the greatest thing on there… everytime he would score a touchdown his automatic celebration was to pull out a notebook, open the notebook and on the header it said: “Records”. And it was him just scribbling…
‘Then I looked it up when I got older and he has all the f***ing records. That’s why they did it. And it’s just full circle that I’m as good as Jerry Rice at backyard football. I made it dude!’
That joke prompted a laugh from both Kelce brothers, with Jason suggesting Travis should now imitate the celebration after his next score.
‘I’m way too far away from any of the other records Jerry has!’ the younger Kelce joked. ‘I missed my opportunity.’
