Triathlete, 43, dies of a heart attack while taking part in early-morning event on Barry Island

  • A 43-year-old old man died this morning competing in a triathlon on Barry Island
  • He is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest shortly before 7.30 this morning
  • His next of kin have been informed and a formal investigation has been launched

A 43-year-old old man died this morning while competing in a triathlon on Barry Island in Wales. 

Emergency services were called to Whitmore beach shortly before 7.30 this morning where the triathlete is thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

The Coastguard, lifeguards and ambulance service were called out and CPR was carried out on the man but he was declared dead at the scene and taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Two paramedic cars and an ambulance were called to the triathlon at 7.26 after receiving reports of a ‘medical emergency’.

There were already medical response teams on site due to the nature of the event.

His next of kin have been informed and a formal investigation has been launched.  

It was the first time the sprint triathlon was being held.
