A young skincare entrepreneur has made $27,000 in 24 hours by selling a natural moisturising sunscreen on Instagram.

Former beauty therapist Kayla Houlihan, from Geelong, Victoria, founded cruelty-free brand Tribe Skincare two years ago, and has seen her business enjoy a meteoric rise to the top, making a staggering $1.3million in the past 12 months alone.

Her latest offering, Protect Me! Day Moisturiser with SPF30, launched exclusively via social media on Monday and swiftly shifted more than 465 bottles in a single business day at $58 each.

Made with natural ingredients including zinc oxide, which protects against harmful solar rays that burn and age skin, the moisturiser claims to leave your face hydrated and silky with a non-greasy, matte finish, making it perfect for use as a makeup base.

The new moisturiser follows an SPF15 version of the product launched earlier this year, which boasts a string of five-star reviews with many calling it the best sunscreen they have ever used.

Tribe’s latest sunscreen is made with all-natural ingredients and large quantities of purified zinc, something Kayla believes sets it apart from other offerings.

‘Australians associate zinc with the thick white paste that we were forced to wear as kids,’ Kayla told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Zinc offers incredible protection from the harsh Aussie sun, but we needed to create something really wearable.

‘By using smaller particles of zinc set in a luxe, silky and mattifying formula, we have created a one-step routine for Aussies in the morning, with their daily moisturiser, sun protection and makeup-base all in one.’

NATURAL SUNSCREEN VS. CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN

The difference between traditional, chemical-based sunscreens and the natural mineral sunscreens comes down to type of active ingredients used in the products.

Natural sunscreen physically reflects harmful UV rays, while chemical sunscreen absorbs radiation as it tries to penetrate the skin.

Mineral-based creams use physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which form an actual barrier on the skin, reflecting UV rays.

Chemical sunscreens use chemical blockers – typically a combination of oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate or octinoxate – which absorb UV radiation to dissipate it.

Some chemical UV blockers have been found to disrupt hormone production, linked to an increased risk of endometriosis in women and poor sperm quality in men.

While many brands have dedicated ranges for dry and sensitive skin, Kayla has positioned Tribe as a skincare line exclusively for sensitive skin of any type, including dry, oily, acne-prone and combination.

In the two years since launching, she has forged relationships with some of Australia’s most in-demand influencers, like Brittney Lee Saunders and Tully Smyth, who both work as brand ambassadors for Tribe.

The brand has built a following of more than 54,400 followers on Instagram.

In September, the brand’s Chill Out! Hydrating Mask sold out in 24 hours, netting them over $43,000 in profit in a single day.
