TripAdvisor reveals its most booked attractions of 2019: Rome’s Colosseum is No.1 followed by the Louvre and the Vatican Museums, with the Tower of London most popular in the UK

TripAdvisor has revealed its most-booked-attractions ranking for 2018, and it’s Rome’s Colosseum that’s number one.
The list was produced following analysis of the travel site’s 250,000 bookable tours and activities.
The Louvre comes in second place followed by the Vatican Museums. The top-ranked US attraction is New York’s Statue of Liberty in fourth place while most popular in the UK is the Tower of London.

The rest of the world top 10 list is made up of the Eiffel Tower in Paris (fifth), Barcelona’s Basilica of the Sagrada Familia (sixth), the French Quarter in New Orleans (seventh), Anne Frank House in Amsterdam (eighth), the Skydeck in Chicago’s Willis Tower (ninth) and the Piazza San Marco in Venice (10th).
The top-ranking Colosseum, a former gladiator arena, is almost 2,000 years old and was built to hold more than 50,000 spectators.
The second-place Louvre is considered one of the world’s greatest art museums with an unparalleled collection of items, including Leonardo da Vinci’s, Mona Lisa.
Third-placed Vatican Museums has a huge collection of art amassed by popes over hundreds of years – including significant examples of Roman sculpture and Renaissance art.

The Statue of Liberty, recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy, has stood in New York’s harbour since 1886. She was a gift of friendship from France.
Meanwhile, top-rated UK attraction the Tower of London, which missed out on a place in the global top 10, houses the Crown Jewels, the prison cell of Sir Walter Raleigh, known as the Bloody Tower, the Chapel of St. John and the Royal Armories.
TripAdvisor also produced a list of the 10 most popular UK attractions.
Following the Tower of London is Stonehenge in second place and the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland in third.

The rest of the UK top 10 is rounded off by Loch Ness (sixth), Edinburgh Castle (seventh), Buckingham Palace (eighth), Stirling Castle (ninth) and St Paul’s Cathedral (10th).
Laurel Greatrix, a TripAdvisor spokesperson, said: ‘Iconic and historic sites from around the world will always be popular destinations for travellers, but they’re popular for a reason.
‘These are some of the most historic and memorable sites in the world. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, there are plenty of interesting ways to see these sites, like an underground tour of the Colosseum, a family treasure hunt at the Louvre, or even a prime view of the Pope’s weekly address.’
