Four people were killed and two more left fighting for life after the sedan they were travelling in crashed into a truck in a horrific head-on collision.

Police said the sedan was heading east along Dohertys Road in Truganina in Melbourne’s west when it crashed head-on into the truck near Forsyth Road about 7.30pm.

Two of the car’s occupants died at the scene and another two were pronounced dead as they arrived at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Two others who were inside the car are in hospital with life-threatening injuries, a Victoria Police spokesman said.

‘The driver and sole occupant of the truck was taken to hospital for observation,’ the spokesman said.

Fire Rescue Victoria said rescue crews pried the sedan driver and his five passengers from the car after all six trapped were inside the vehicle.

Images from the scene showed the sedan with its side doors removed.

Dohertys Road is still closed between Forsyth Rd and Dunmore Drive while detectives investigate the circumstances behind the crash.
