Trump angers social media by joking about ‘bad hair day’ while nation reels from synagogue slaughter

As the nation was reeling from the horrific massacre of 11 people gunned down at a Pittsburgh synagogue by an anti-Semitic extremists, President Donald Trump made a joke about his bad hair day possibly causing him to cancel a political rally and then tweeted about the World Series.

While the news from Pittsburgh was still fresh, Trump spoke on Saturday at a young farmers convention in Indianapolis.

Though there was some talk that the president would put off the rally because of the tragedy in Pittsburgh, Trump suggested another reason to cancel.

He told the crowd that he had just held a news conference during which he was asked about the synagogue shooting.

Trump called it a ‘very unfortunate news conference.’

He noted that since the news conference was outdoors, he had to brave the elements, including rain and wind.

The weather apparently wreaked havoc with his hair.

'Unspeakably vile and callous,' wrote one Twitter user. 'Trump says he considered canceling his political rally not because 11 people were murdered in an anti-Semitic act of terrorism, but because he had a bad hair day due to answering questions about the murders of Jews in the rain'

‘I said, “Maybe I should cancel this arrangement because I have a bad hair day”,’ he told the crowd.

‘And the bad news – somebody said, “Actually it looks better than it usually does”.’

Trump’s supporters in the crowd laughed at the joke, but on Twitter the reaction was not as friendly.

‘He is endlessly repugnant.’

Trump also posted an odd tweet late Saturday about the World Series baseball game even as the country was coming to grips with the shocking massacre.

The president tweeted: ‘Watching the Dodgers/Red Sox final innings.

‘It is amazing how a manager takes out a pitcher who is loose & dominating through almost 7 innings, Rich Hill of Dodgers, and brings in nervous reliever(s) who get shellacked. 4 run lead gone.

‘Managers do it all the time, big mistake!’

Trump was ridiculed again for the tweet, which appeared insensitive given the timing.

Tweeted one Twitter user: ‘Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss world events. Small, petty minds discuss baseball on a day when eleven Americans are murdered.’

Minutes later, Trump tweeted in response to a video by conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza and NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch.

In the video, D’Souza and Loesch compared Trump to Abraham Lincoln.

The timing of the tweets were odd, given that families were still mourning their loved ones in Pittsburgh.

After defiantly stating that he would attend a previously scheduled political rally in Illinois, Trump says he will be going to Pittsburgh in the wake of the mass shooting.

Speaking to reporters in southern Illinois before a rally, Trump confirmed he would go but did not offer details.

The president said the NYSE opened ‘the following day’ after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Trump’s comment about the NYSE is not true. The stock exchange re-opened six days after the attacks that brought down the World Trade Center.

‘We have our lives,’ Trump said.

‘We have our schedules. And nobody’s going to change it.

‘So we’re here. And let’s have a good time.

‘And if you don’t mind: I’m going to tone it down just a little bit.’

Many in the audience replied: ‘No!’
