Trump is poised to pardon imprisoned grandmother championed by Kim Kardashian

President Donald Trump is on the verge of offering clemency to a first-time drug offender and grandmother whose case has been championed by reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

The paperwork for a pardon for 63-year-old Alice Johnson was being finalized on Tuesday, the Washington Post reported.

A lawyer for Johnson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the DailyMail.

Johnson was not among the cases Trump told reporters he was mulling last week on Air Force One.

His chief spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders, said Monday, ‘The President is considering a number of different pardons and commutations, and when we have an announcement on that, we’ll certainly let you guys know.’

Trump met with Kim Kardashian last week to discuss Johnson’s case in the Oval Office. The White House shared a picture of Kardashian and Trump, who was grinning from ear to ear, after the meeting that reporters were not allowed anywhere near was over.

In the meeting Trump and Kardashian talked about more than prison reform, Bloomberg News reports.

He also thanked Kardashian an her husband Kayne West for boosting his popularity with African-Americans, a group that is not a strong supporter of his presidency.

Two sources familiar with the conversation recounted it to Bloomberg News.

Trump received only 8 percent of African-American vote in 2016, compared to the 88 percent who supported Hillary Clinton.

Kardashian met with Trump and White House adviser Jared Kushner in separate meetings for an hour at the White House on May 30 to make her case for a presidential pardon for Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old grandmother serving a life sentence without parole for a drug offense.

Trump hasn’t mentioned Johnson’s case although he issued a pardon for conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza since that meeting.

‘The president’s considering a number of different pardons and communtations and when we have an announcement on that we’ll let you guys know,’ White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said when asked about Johnson at her Monday press briefing.

Additionally, Trump has  publicly mulled pardoning Martha Stewart and commuting the sentence of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Kardashian’s pitch didn’t get immediate traction with the president, Bloomberg reported.

Trump did tweet a photo with Kardashian featuring their Oval Office meeting.

‘Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing,’ he wrote.

The star of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ told Mic News the meeting went well.

‘He really understood, and I am very hopeful that this will turn out really positively,’ she said.

About a month before Kardashian visited the White House her husband, rapper Kayne West, praised Trump in a tweet: ‘You don’t have to agree with trump but the mob can’t make me not love him. We are both dragon energy.’

He later revealed that his ‘Make America Great Again’ hat is signed by Trump himself, posting a picture of the accessory.

Trump later retweeted the message and wrote: ‘Thank you Kanye, very cool!’

The president then praised him a few days later at a rally in Michigan.

‘Kanye West gets it — when he sees African American unemployment is the lowest in history, you know, people are watching,’ Trump told a crowd of supporters.

West got some social media grief for his posts and Kardashian took to twitter to defend him.

‘Now when he spoke about Trump…Most people (including myself) have very different feelings & opinions about this,’ she wrote.

‘But this is HIS opinion. I believe in people being able to have their own opinions, even if really different from mine. He never said he agrees with his politics.’

In a separate tweet Kardashian reiterated that she loved and respected her husband.

‘Kanye will never run in the race of popular opinion and we know that and that’s why I love him and respect him,’ she said.

Trump later credited the April tweet from West with raising his approval rating among African Americans.

‘Kanye West must have some power because you probably saw I doubled my African American poll numbers. We went from 11 to 22 in one week,’ Trump said May 4 at the National Rifle Association’s annual conference in Texas.

He didn’t offer details on where he got those statistics.

A Reuters tracking poll shows Trump’s approval among African-Americans rose by six points – from 12 percent in April to 18 percent in May.

After her meeting with Trump, Kardashian tweeted:  ‘I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense.’

Johnson was imprisoned for life in 1996 for drug dealing and money laundering after her 15 accomplices all testified against her and had their own charges dropped – despite Johnson’s minor role in the cocaine ring. It was her first offense.

She arrived at and left the White House for her meeting last week in a black SUV, wearing all black except for yellow stilettos.

She did not make an attempt to engage with a pack of press staking her out.
