Hopes of a historic summit between the US and North Korea are dwindling fast after an official from Pyongyang resorted to childish name-calling.
Choe Son Hui, a vice minister for foreign affairs, labelled Mike Pence a ‘political dummy’ and said North Korea would not ‘beg’ for a diplomatic meeting between the two nations.
Her comments are likely to increase tensions between the two states, as she added North Korea was just as willing to meet in a nuclear confrontation than at the negotiating table.
It comes after Pence’s remarks that Kim Jong-un may end up like former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who gave up his nuclear weapons but was killed eight years later.
The likelihood of the schedule June 12 summit in Singapore seems even more remote as the schism between the sides appears to widen.
