Trump returns to White House hand-in-hand with granddaughter Arabella

President Donald Trump has returned to the White House after spending the weekend away with daughter Ivanka, her husband Jared Kushner and their young children.

Trump and his family arrived at Joint Base Andrews on Air Force One at around 7pm on Sunday, after spending the weekend together at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Although the weather was beautiful for golfing, the White House did not release details of Trump’s activities over the weekend.

After remaining silent on Twitter on Saturday, Trump fired off a series of tweets beginning on Sunday morning, touting GDP growth, threatening a government shutdown over immigration, and attacking both the media and Robert Mueller’s probe.

Trump and his seven-year-old granddaughter Arabella were the first to disembark Air Force One, holding hands as they walked down the stairs to the tarmac.

The President, wearing a white MAGA hat, was greeted at the bottom of the stairs by Col. Samuel Chesnut, vice commander, 89th Airlift Wing, Joint Base Andrews. The pair shook hands.

Ivanka, Jared Kushner and their two other children followed off the plane shortly afterward.

The couple, both advisors to the President, spent the weekend away with Trump close on the heels of reports that they remain close to the center of White House power, after hunkering down to avoid months of public criticism.

On the tarmac at Andrews was spotted an Italian government jet, just one day ahead of Trump’s planned meeting with new Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday at the White House.

Like Trump, Conte was swept into office on a populist wave, and the two men seemed to forge a sympathetic alliance during the often rocky G7 summit last month in Canada.

Marine One took off from Andrews carrying the First Family at 7.17pm and landed at the White House at 7.26pm.

Trump again held Arabella’s hand as he crossed the South Lawn, with Ivanka and Kushner following behind.

As he entered the White House, the President did not answer shouted questions from reporters about a potential government shutdown or the upcoming trial of Paul Manafort.

Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, was charged with financial fraud unrelated to the election after he was swept up in Mueller’s ongoing probe into possible links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

His trial begins on Tuesday in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia. The most serious charges against Manafort carry sentences of up to 30 years.

As the sun set at the White House on Sunday, protesters gathered along Pennsylvania Avenue bearing signs reading ‘traitor’ and light-up letters spelling ‘treason’.

One protester was seen playing a portable keyboard, though it was unclear what song he performed.
