Trump signed omnibus spending bill to avoid govt shutdown backlash

President Donald Trump signed a $1.3trillion omnibus spending bill Friday to avoid the public backlash that would follow if the nation fell into another government shutdown.

He signed the bill reportedly saying ‘F*** that’ when aides warned him of the public outcry and criticism that would follow a shutdown should no spending plan be passed, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rather than take the blame, he passed the spending plan saying, ‘I say to Congress I will never sign another bill like this again’.

The president signed the lengthy 2,232 page-bill that held an array of budgets from border security to the opioids crisis. The bill was on display in a thick stack at the press conference.

‘It’s not right and it’s very bad for our country,’ he said in a press conference Friday.

‘I’m not gonna do it again. ‘Nobody read it. It’s only hours old. Some people don’t even know what it is,’ he added to reporters.

‘As a matter of national security, I have signed this omnibus budget bill. There are a lot of things that I’m unhappy about in this bill. There are a lot of things that we shouldn’t have had in this bill, but we were in a sense forced if we want to build our military,’ Trump said.

On Friday he took to Twitter to reveal he threatened to veto the bill hours before he signed it, claiming he was concerned with DACA protections.

‘I am considering a VETO of the Omnibus Spending Bill based on the fact that the 800,000 plus DACA recipients have been totally abandoned by the Democrats (not even mentioned in Bill) and the BORDER WALL, which is desperately needed for our National Defense, is not fully funded,’ he said.

Hours later he accepted the bill but revealed on Twitter he was hesitant about it, avoiding what would have been a sixth government shut down since October.

‘As a matter of National Security I’ve signed the Omnibus Spending Bill. I say to Congress: I will NEVER sign another bill like this again. To prevent this omnibus situation from ever happening again, I’m calling on Congress to give me a line-item veto for all govt spending bills!’ he said.

In his remarks Trump addressed the veto, saying it was the military spending plan that finally convinced him to get on board with the bill.

‘We looked at it, a veto. I looked very seriously at the veto. I was thinking about doing the veto, But because of the incredible gains that we’ve been able to make for the military, that overrode any of our thinking.’

In the press conference Trump noted the military improvements that the budget would create, including nuclear weapons.

‘We had no choice but to fund our military because we have to have by far the strongest military in the world, and this will be by far the strongest military that we’ve ever had,’ Trump said.

‘We’re spending a lot of money on nuclear our nuclear systems,’ he added.
