Trump suggests US close to ‘big’ trade agreement with Mexico

President Donald Trump says the United States is close to a ‘big trade Agreement’ with Mexico.

Trump took to Twitter on Saturday morning to share the news that ‘a big Trade Agreement with Mexico could be happening soon!’

‘Our relationship with Mexico is getting closer by the hour,’ he added.

‘Some really good people within both the new and old government, and all working closely together.’

The US and Mexico have been discussing a trade deal as part of negotiations over the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Donald Trump took to Twitter on Saturday morning to share the news that ‘a big Trade Agreement with Mexico could be happening soon!’

Trump has been seeking a revised version of the 24-year-old trade deal with Mexico and Canada.

The president’s tweet came after Jesus Seade, the NAFTA representative for president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, met with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

Seade spoke highly of the meeting on Thursday, revealing it helped resolve concerns that the deal placed too many restrictions on how Mexico can treat foreign oil companies investing in the country.

‘It was a rich, fun, important negotiation, from which everything emerged in a very satisfactory way for all involved,’ Seade told Time.

‘We’ve adjusted very well the focus, but without changing the content, the substance, and we’ve arrived at a solution that should be satisfactory for everyone.’

‘We still need to check technical texts, and I want to be respectful of everyone, but it’s now substantially agreed, with the correct focus.’

Also present at the meeting was Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo and Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray.

Guajardo likewise said he expected Saturday to be a ‘big day’ for trade negotiations.

The NAFTA talks are expected to continue next week and the goal is for the deal to be finalized by the end of the month.

Canada is expected to rejoin talks after the US and Mexico work out their concerns.

Trump recently said he has had better relations with Mexico following Obrador’s election in July.

The president has long had a thorny partnership with America’s neighbor due to his push for Mexico to pay for his border wall.

He had an especially heated relationship with current Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

After Trump vowed that Mexico would pay for the border wall in May, Nieto made his stance on the issue clear.

‘President @realDonaldTrump: NO. Mexico will NEVER pay for a wall. Not now, not ever. Sincerely, Mexico (all of us).’

On Friday Obrador thanked Trump for treating Mexicans with more ‘respect’ in recent months.

‘For some time now, he has been very prudent in referring to Mexicans, or he hasn’t said offensive things,’ Obrador said.

‘I have to thank him for that. Up to now, things are going well. There has been respect.’
