Australian TV personality Sami Lukis has revealed she’s hired her own ‘singles coach’ to become ‘better’ and ‘smarter’ at finding Mr Right.

The 48-year-old – who previously opened up about being a ‘serial dater’ for 30 years – said she turned to therapy as a way to help navigate the modern dating world.

In an opinion piece for 9Honey, the ‘unlucky in love’ radio host said she discovered three ‘uncomfortable truths’ about herself during the coaching sessions.

Sami said one of the mistakes she makes was not giving her date a second chance.

‘Dating really comes down to judging someone and being judged, which can cause anyone to say and do some weird stuff,’ she said, adding it takes at least three dates to get to really know someone.

Another thing she learned about herself was she has ‘commitment-phobe’.

‘I’m extremely independent, I don’t like being vulnerable and I’m terrified of rejection. That combo clearly presents all kinds of challenges in the dating department,’ she said.

Finally, she said many singles are ‘either seeking pleasure’ or ‘avoiding pain’.

‘When we applied this theory to my dating M.O., I realised my desire to avoid yet another dating disappointment is stronger than my desire to meet a nice guy,’ she said.

‘I’d rather stay at home watching serial killers on Netflix than risk wasting my time on another dud date. (Also not healthy. I’ll need more therapy to work through that one as well.)’

Earlier this year, Sami said she was was given the worst dating advice from her married friends who told her to ‘go and get yourself a widower’.

‘I have not been hanging out at funeral homes but I can tell you, that’s the serious advice I’ve been getting from my married friends,’ she told The Morning Show.

‘[They say] the best option for me is to find a man, and I’m sorry to be so brutal about this but this is what the theory is – a man whose wife has died is not single by choice so there’s a good chance that he might still be a decent bloke.’

She said she’s fed up with married couples ‘meddling’ with her dating life.

‘Our married friends meddling with our dating lives to a degree,’ she said.

‘We love our married friends but two things happen – you become single in your 40s or your 50s, often it’s the case you end up finding yourself as the only single person in your social group.

‘One thing that becomes clear when you’re a single person at this age is married people like to hang out with married people so unfortunately the invitations kind of dried up and a lot of us start to feel ostracised from your married friends.

‘But when you do engage with us, it’s usually to give us ridiculously unwarranted, outdated dating advice, which you have no idea about because you haven’t dated for 20 years.

‘You don’t get it because the dating scene has changed dramatically in the last 10 to 20 years.’
