Continuing our series featuring the holiday experiences of famous people, this week TV presenter Kate Humble recalls her travel adventures…

What can’t you travel without?

Really good walking boots. There’s something very reassuring about having comfortable feet.

Earliest holiday memory?

Finding a dead puffin in the sand dunes at Skegness when I was about six. I was so entranced by this amazing creature’s rainbow bill and smart, black-and-white plumage, I carried it around like a doll.

Favourite hotel?

I have stayed in some astonishing hotels, but I’ve had more unique experiences sleeping in a tent. I love being out in the wild and feeling like you’re on your own. Actually, the best thing is sleeping under the stars — no hotel could beat that.

Favourite UK destination?

I’m totally torn between South Wales’s Gower Peninsula, which is one of the most beautiful bits of coastline in the world, and the Brecon Beacons, which are on my doorstep. I moved to Wales 11 years ago because my heart lifted every time I drove over the Severn Bridge.

Most memorable meal?

Testicle soup, when I was filming in Mongolia and living with a nomadic family in the Gobi Desert. I was terrified about eating these poor lamb testicles floating in broth, but it was absolutely delicious.
