TV presenter John Leslie today insisted he was ‘totally innocent’ after being charged with sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub.

The former Blue Peter host, who lives in Edinburgh, allegedly attacked a 30-year-old woman in London’s Soho more than a decade ago in December 2008.

Leslie, 54, will face one charge of sexual assault when he appears at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on July 25.

Leslie told the Evening Standard: ‘I am totally innocent of the historic allegation and will be contesting the trial’.

He was charged by postal requisition more than five weeks ago on June 5 over the alleged offence on Greek Street, but the details only emerged today.

A Scotland Yard spokesman told MailOnline today: ‘John Leslie Stott, 54, of Edinburgh, Midlothian, was charged by postal requisition on June 5 with sexual touching of a woman aged 16 or over, contrary to Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

‘He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on July 25 at 9.30am. The allegation relates to an incident in Westminster in December 2008.

Leslie was one of the presenters on ITV's This Morning programme between 1999 and 2002

Leslie’s big break came in 1989 on Blue Peter, and he worked alongside Caron Keating, Tim Vincent, Anthea Turner and Diane-Louise Jordan for five years.

He is also a former host of ITV’s This Morning programme and the game show Wheel Of Fortune, and presented a show on Edinburgh radio station Forth 2 in recent years.
