Twitter pokes fun at Esther McVey after Tory leadership race elimination

Twitter users have poked fun at Esther McVey for being eliminated in the first round of the Tory leadership battle following her spat with Lorraine Kelly.

Ms McVey received just nine votes this morning – missing the cut off of 17 to stay in the contest, and coming dead last out of 10 nominees.

Now Brits have taken to the social media platform to mock the MP for Tatton in Cheshire, with one posting a picture of the ITV presenter laughing alongside the caption: ‘We now go live to Lorraine!’  

Earlier this week, Mrs Kelly appeared to snub her former GMTV colleague live on air while she was a guest on Good Morning Britain.

It quickly escalated into a tit-for-tat, with Ms McVey claiming she was promoted above Mrs Kelly at GMTV, before the star hit back saying she was ‘baffled’ by the claim.

Mrs Kelly then said there was no feud between the pair, and that she disagreed with her purely because of her views on LGBT rights.

The apparent row has dominated the headlines in recent days, and last night a friend claimed that Ms McVey blames Labour-supporting Fiona Phillips, Kate Garraway and Gloria De Piero – all GMTV stars – for her feud with Mrs Kelly.

Plenty of Twitter users have placed the blame for Ms McVey’s failure on the feud with Mrs Kelly, and decided to rip into her for it. 

Several posted videos and photos of Mrs Kelly laughing in various TV roles with captions including ‘@LorraineKelly just heard @EstherMcVey1 got the lowest number of votes…’ and ‘Somewhere Lorraine Kelly is like’.

Adam B added: ‘The real winner here is Lorraine Kelly as McVey finishes last.’

A Twitter user captioned a laughing video: ‘The actress known as Lorraine Kelly learns that Esther McVey is out of the Tory leadership running.’

Zahra Mulroy added: ‘In these uncertain times, I’d really like to think that the artist known as Lorraine Kelly had a hand in Esther McVey’s leadership defeat.’

The row began after Piers Morgan asked if Mrs Kelly remembered Ms McVey as the pair shared a dressing room years ago.

And now some people are hoping Mrs Kelly will take down other prime minister hopefuls.

David Ahluwalia wrote: ‘Fingers crossed Lorraine Kelly once shared a dressing room with Boris Johnson.’

Alice Jones added: ‘Does Lorraine Kelly have any views on/ old beef with Boris Johnson. Because now is the time, if so.’

George tweeted: ‘Lorraine Kelly take down Boris next pls.’

The former former secretary topped the secret ballot with backing from 114 MPs – ahead of Jeremy Hunt in second with 43.
