Twitter users mock May’s Cabinet reshuffle shambles

  • Twitter users poked fun at Theresa May’s hotly anticipated reshuffle online
  • Tory tweet wrongly naming Chris Grayling as party chairman sparked parodies
  • Gaffe compared to La La Land incorrectly named best film at last year’s Oscars

Theresa May’s Cabinet reshuffle shambles was mocked by Twitter users today as Brits posted a series of memes poking fun at the gaffe-ridden shake-up.

The PM has embarked on her biggest reshuffle but it got off to an embarrassing start after the Tory Twitter account wrongly announced Chris Grayling was being made party chairman.

The tweet was swiftly deleted after less than a minute and it later emerged Brandon Lewis had been given the top party job.

But the mishap was quickly seized upon by internet users who posted hilarious parodies of the blunder on Twitter.

One user compared it to the 2015 Miss Universe contest when Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was crowned winner – only to have her crown snatched away and handed to Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

Twitter user Brian Spanner posted a picture of the infamous moment at last year's Oscars when La La Land was wrongly given the award for best film with the words: 'Chris Grayling!'

Others took to Twitter to post a series of funny gifs lampooning Mr Grayling’s brief tenure as party chief.

Thomas Mackintosh posted a clip of the TV show Countdown adding: ‘Chris Grayling’s tenure as Conservative Party chairman lasted about as long as the timer on countdown #reshuffle.’

One user Denise posted a video of Superman knocking back a shot whisky with the caption: ‘Chris Grayling just spotted in the Downing Street canteen.’

Another Twitter user posted a clip of Grandpa Simpson strolling into a room and taking off his hat before doing an about turn and leaving again.

While Richard Brooks also used a scene from The Simpsons to poke fun at the shambles.

He posted a clip of Homer Simpson fading into a hedge with the caption: ‘Chris Grayling’s tenure as Conservative Party chairman.’

Mrs May is hoping to renew her premiership by switching up her top team and bringing in some new faces to the frontbench.

She axed her party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin after the Tory election disaster and her own calamitous conference speech which was disrupted by a serial prankster handing her a fake P45.

James Brokenshire resigned as Northern Ireland Secretary due to poor health while Justice Secretary David Lidington has been shifted to fill the gap left by the axing of deputy PM Damian Green.

However, although he will deputise for Mrs May at PMQs he has not been granted the same status as First Secretary of State.

Embarrassingly the image congratulating Mr Grayling had already been shared by MPs including Rebecca Pow and Sheryll Murray.

Earlier the official Tory website crashed after someone apparently forgot to renew a security certificate.
