Twitter users reveal their oldest, most cherished grudges

Twitter users are revealing their longest-held grudges in a new social media trand that proves there is nothing more satisfying than proving naysayers wrong.

It all started when journalist Nicole Cliffe oldest took to her Twitter to start a thread, asking users to: ‘tell me your oldest, most cherished grudge.’

Nicole herself shared her own personal grudge against her third grade teacher Mrs Robinson, who ‘accused me of lying in front of everyone when I said I had read A Girl of the Limberlost.’

In response to the question and Nicole’s own story offering, the users of Twitter certainly did not disappoint, letting loose with a massive stream of stories.

Some users recalled playground squabbles from their childhood – and the payback they were one day able to dish out.

‘Kid pushed me into mud, ruined my favourite coat in grade 4 & moved before I could get revenge. I denied his FB friend request 3 yrs ago,’ wrote one user.

Another singled out the boy across the street that tried to be her boyfriend in the fifth grade and ‘infiltrated my Neopets guild to deliberately start drama’ when she rejected him.

Parents and their convenient lies were also a popular topic, such as the mom and dad of one young woman who ‘told me the ice cream truck only played music when it had run out of ice cream.’

Other users remembered pop culture moments that they still haven’t recovered from, such as one hockey fan who wrote: ‘When I was 8 the [Pittsburgh Penguins} traded Jaromir Jagr away for almost nothing, and they won’t bring him back.’

However, most of those contributing to the thread told a similar story of a grudge that contributed heavily to where they ended up in life.

‘We didn’t cover the suffrage movement in what I considered sufficient detail in Year 9 history so I did my PhD and wrote a book on it,’ wrote one woman.

Another explained how her ‘ex-boyfriend told me I wasn’t smart enough to be an engineer, so I’m working on my 2nd engineering degree.’

Plenty of users also were able to show one up on their former naysayers, such as one user whose careers adviser had laughed in his face upon learning he wanted to be a performer.

‘Last year I sent him a picture of me collecting a BAFTA,’ he said.

After receiving hundreds of responses and retweeting dozens of them Nicole concluded that: ‘The secret to personal success is PROVING HATERS WRONG.

‘In conclusion, all of you are wonderful and your pettiness and personal excellence will fuel me creatively for months to come.’
