One police officer is dead and another is wounded after they responded to a call of an armed home invasion in Detroit.

The officers, who have not yet been publicly named, were responding to an urgent call for help near the intersection of Wyoming and Chippewa at around 7.20pm on Wednesday.

The suspect, who was wounded when police returned fire, is hospitalized under police custody receiving treatment for his injury.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said that the tragic incident unfolded when a man armed with a high-powered rifle stormed into a home on the city’s west side, angry and looking for his girlfriend in a suspected domestic incident.

Officers responded to a 911 call for assistance and encountered residents fleeing from the home, who warned them that the armed man was inside.

The responding officers put out a radio call advising of the armed home invader, and assembled a four-man team to immediately enter the home.

The officers cleared the ground floor of the home and were proceeding down the stairs to check a lower level when the suspect opened fire.

One officer, a three-year veteran of the force, was struck by the gunfire and sustained a single wound in his left leg.

A second officer, an 18-year-veteran of the force, was struck in the neck by gunfire.

The suspect was shot and wounded by one of the responding officers. He attempted to escape and was apprehended a short distance away.

A heavy police presence was seen at the scene of the shooting on Wednesday night

Both officers were rushed to Sinai Grace Hospital. The officer struck in the neck was declared dead. The officer struck in the leg is listed in stable condition.

The suspect was also hospitalized and is receiving treatment in unknown condition.

A massive contingent of law enforcement officers from Detroit and nearby agencies arrived at the hospital to support the families of the killed and wounded officers.

Chief Craig and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan also arrived at the hospital in solidarity.

‘The Detroit police have got to be as courageous as any people in this country,’ Duggan said in brief remarks to the press.

Chief Craig called the fallen officer ‘a solid police officer.’

‘He was loved — right here today you have in excess of 275 officers who came out to show support,’ he said. ‘They knew that he had made the ultimate sacrifice.’
