  • Brothers were set to inherit $1.5 million from her estate, the court heard

An Australian Federal Police officer and his brother have faced court accused of leaving their terminally ill mother in a pool of her own faeces and urine for weeks before her tragic death.

Brothers Phillip and David Thompson – who were allegedly set to inherit $1.5million from their mother’s estate – are accused of leaving Shirley, 73, for so long she developed bedsores down to the bone.

Phillip, a 42-year-old civilian employee with the AFP and a former New South Wales Police officer, and David, 39, were meant to be their mother’s caregivers, Fairfield Local Court was told.

Instead they are facing manslaughter charges following her tragic death.

Police claim the elderly woman was found naked and lying in her own faeces and urine in her bed by paramedics after Philip phoned for an ambulance in August last year.

She was taken from her home in Greystanes in western Sydney to Blacktown Hospital and told ambulance workers that she did not know when she last had a shower, the court was told.

She also claimed that she had only been given a rag to clean herself with, police allege.

Shirley later died in hospital after getting blood poisoning from her 19 bedsores.

According to Nine News, the court was told that Shirley had likely not left bed for two to three weeks and may not have had food or drink.

Philip had his application for bail rejected. David did not apply for bail. They will next face court on June 28.

NSW Police formed a strike force to investigate her death in September 2017.

The AFP confirmed an officer had been stood down from his duties.
