The branch had to be cut shorter before Mr Foster could be airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital as it was too long to fit in the helicopter.

Mr Foster underwent surgery on Monday and is expected back in the operating room on Saturday.

Trauma surgeon Dr Sana Nasim said Mr Foster was lucky as if the branch had gone through been a few inches to the side it would have struck one of his major organs.

Despite the near-miss, Mr Foster said he will be back on his bike once he is fully recovered.
