Two young men who were setting off fireworks on Monday night in Jersey City were shot by police, it has been reported.

Davonte Moore, 21, a gifted college footballer, was shot in both knees and a leg after officers responded to the sound of fireworks being set off in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood.

What led to shots being fired is not currently known but Moore’s mother is now demanding to know why her son was hospitalized over what appeared to be a minor incident.

She said her son plays football at Iowa Western Community College in Iowa and she now fears he’ll never play again. He is expected to undergo surgery on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old second victim, 19-year-old Shyquan Blade, said he and Moore were setting off roman candle fireworks when police confronted them and shots were fired. 

He was reportedly released from the hospital around 5:30 a.m.  Police have not confirmed this information.

A police spokesperson told the DailyMail.com: ‘There are no indications of any violations of the Attorney General guidelines on the officers’ part. 

‘As per our standard practice, any use of force by JCPD is immediately turned over for investigation to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, an independent and professional agency with complete oversight and prosecutorial authority. 

‘We ask anyone with any information as well as all other inquiries regarding this matter contact the HCPO.’
