Two out-of-control bushfires trap 12 people after firefighters warn it’s ‘too late to leave’

Residents have been told it’s too late to leave and are urged to seek shelter as two bushfire threats ravage Queensland.

A blaze is burning in the Blackdown Tableland National Park, 150km west of Rockhampton, central Queensland, where twelve people are reportedly trapped by the bushfire.

RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service said its crew and two other helicopters responded to the emergency at Rainbow Falls around 1.30pm.

The people will need to be winched from the area as there is thick bush with a heavy canopy, a RACQ spokeswoman told AAP.

The fire broke out earlier on Sunday around Charlevue Road at Dingo.

Meanwhile, residents in far north Queensland, near Herberton, have been warned it’s too late to leave.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services released an emergency warning for Walsh River, about 110 kilometres south-west of Cairns, on Sunday afternoon.

‘Currently as at 3.20pm Sunday 30 September, a fast moving fire is travelling in a westerly direction towards Walsh River Road,’ QFES said.

‘The fire is expected to have a life-threatening impact on the community.’
