Two people accused trying fly drone into Brisbane prison

Two people have been arrested after they allegedly tried to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into a high security Brisbane prison using a stolen drone.

Donald Griffin, 21, and Karlie Cuzzu, 34, were arrested about 1am on Tuesday after they allegedly tried to fly a drone into the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre at Wacol in Brisbane’s south-west.

The pair parked a car near Wacol Train Station where they allegedly tried to fly the drone into the high security men’s prison, Seven News reported.

After several attempts, the pair returned to the car where they were arrested with a bag allegedly containing five mobile phones, chargers, prescription drugs and tobacco.

The pair was also accused of exchanging text messages with a prisoner to organise the alleged smuggling service.

The police believe a mobile phone could have been successfully dropped to an inmate at the Queensland prison.

Guards searched every cell in the prison on Tuesday morning but no phone was found.

While the Victorian Government introduced legislation making it a criminal offence to fly a drone over a prison, there was no such legislation in Queensland.

If caught flying a drone over a correctional facility in Victoria, the offender faced up to two years in prison.
