The explosion led to a power outage in more than 1,000 homes across the northern suburbs, WAToday reported.

Western Power spokesman Paul Entwistle said power was restored to most houses within an hour-and-a-half.

‘It seems to be a case of a couple of lovebirds who have made the wrong connection, unfortunately,’ he said.

‘I think generally from these sorts of incidents, the network comes out trumps but the birds seldom do.’

The kookaburras who caused the outage weren’t so fortunate.

Their bodies were found side by side on the grass under the power pole.
