Two rival gang members are charged in the murder of boy, 3

Two rival gang members have been charged with murder after they killed a 3-year-old boy in a Compton liquor store parking lot.

Dwayne Ward, 30, and Kevaughn Harris, 27, were charged on Friday, The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Ward and Harris, who are from rivaling gangs, got into a verbal dispute, which then led to the fatal shooting of Franklin, 3.

Both men allegedly starting shooting at one another while Harris’ girlfriend and her son Franklin were inside the car. The boy’s mother was not injured. 

Surveillance footage appears to show Harris fired the first shot.

According to officials Harris and his girlfriend were already fleeing the seen in the car before they realized Franklin had been shot.

They stopped at Mexican restaurant in Carson asking people for help, which is when a customer called 911.

Franklin was then take to hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Ward was arrested on January 22 after surrendering to police. He was taken to the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station where he was being held without bail.

On Wednesday detectives arrested Harris, who was being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

Both men were charged with one count of murder, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon. They were expected to be arraigned on Friday.

If convicted Ward and Harris face a possible maximum sentence of life in prison.
