Two sisters with breast cancer in Australia and UK vow to meet again

Two sisters battling breast cancer 17,000 kilometres apart have made a pledge to see each other again.

Roisin Pelan, 36, from Preston, north-west England, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in four years in January.

Her diagnosis encouraged her Melbourne-based sister Lindsey Kennedy, 42, to have a mammogram, followed by an ultrasound which revealed a small speck.

Now neither sister can travel to see each other without receiving an all-clear from a doctor – but despite the setback, they have vowed they will meet again, Seven News reported.

Ms Kennedy said she hopes the meeting could come as soon as the end of this year.

‘We’ll probably embrace then have a champagne, definitely,’ Ms Kennedy said.

The pair have launched an online fundraiser, hoping to raise $10,000 for the reunion, and any additional funds for charity.

Ms Pelan and Ms Kennedy stay in contact through daily Skype calls, where they share their experiences while undergoing chemotherapy.

They have also connected by releasing a song and video aimed at raising breast cancer awareness called Feel The B**bs.

The song – which is sung to the tune of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? – became a viral hit after receiving more than 22,000 views on Facebook.

‘We just wanted to highlight how diagnosing breast cancer early can be so important. It’s just gone crazy,’ Ms Pelan – who wrote the song in ten minutes – told Lancashire Post.

Speaking about the possibility of being reunited with her sister, she added: ‘Being able to hug each other after what we’ve both been through would be so wonderful.’

Ms Pelan was diagnosed the first time when she was 35 weeks pregnant with her daughter Ivy.

She was taken back to hospital just six days after giving birth to have a mastectomy, and was later told the cancer hadn’t spread.

However Ms Pelan underwent her 14th chemotherapy treatment last month after the cancer returned earlier this year.

Since 2014, the mother – along with Ms Kennedy – has raised more than $20,000 for cancer research.

Ms Kennedy’s daughter Layla said she expects her mother to overcome her cancer battle and be reunited with Ms Pelan again soon.

‘She’s always positive and I know that she’ll get through this,’ she told Seven News.
