A two-year-old boy has been seriously injured after a horror accident at a New Zealand airport.

The incident unfolded after the toddler clambered on to a baggage conveyor belt in the departure area of Auckland’s international terminal on Thursday afternoon.

He was rushed to hospital with a cut to his arm after being provided with first aid at the scene, stuff.co.nz reported.

Staff were reportedly surprised to see the little boy had found his way into the baggage handling system at about 3pm. 

An investigation into the incident is now underway.     

‘Unfortunately we can confirm a young boy was injured this afternoon (Thursday) on a baggage conveyor belt in the departure area of the international terminal,’ a statement from Auckland Airport said. 

‘The boy and his mother were taken to hospital. We have begun an investigation. Our thoughts are with the family and young boy.’
